Los Angeles Case Study

Indigo Productions was hired to create a fundraising video for Hollywood superstar Matthew McConaughey’s charitable foundation, just keep livin.

The just keep livin Foundation is dedicated to empowering high school students to lead active lives and make healthy choices to become great men and women.

Countless studies have proven that fundraising videos are among the most powerful tools available to nonprofit organizations seeking potential donors. And Indigo Productions has produced thousands of successful videos since opening its doors in 1991, so this assignment was a natural fit for us.

We began by speaking to Matthew about his motivation for helping kids. He explained that while filming his breakout role in the classic movie Dazed and Confused in 1993, he was in turmoil over the passing of his father. It was during this time that he heard the words “just keep livin”—words that would change his life and provide the inspiration for his intense philanthropic activities.

For our video production, we felt it would be most effective to let the star speak from his heart about his goals and aspirations for helping the kids in his program. We arranged a two-camera video shoot in a hotel near his Los Angeles home and interviewed him for nearly two hours.

During the video editing and post-production phase, we distilled the interview down to its core message: by teaching kids to exercise, eat well, and be grateful for what they have, it’s possible to make a positive and profound impact on their lives.

Matthew told us that the foundation now serves over 1,500 students in 15 schools in Los Angeles, Orange County, Dallas, Austin, and New Orleans. He told us how participation in the foundation’s programs for two hours after school impacts kids’ grades, school attendance, and behavior. He also talked about the importance of teaching kids to give something back in the form of community service.

Why does this Hollywood legend do it all? His answer was simple: “It feels good to help.”
