Los Angeles Online Video Production Increases by 63.1% in Q2 2013

While searching the web, we found some good news – at least for the online video production industry on the West Coast posted by Joshua Cohen on TubeFilter in his article Los Angeles Sees 63% Increase In Online Video Productions. The number is a year-over-year increase and includes projects done in L.A. itself, as well as in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Joshua quotes his data from a report published by FilmL.A., a non-profit organization, self-described as:

“a private, 501(c)4 not-for-profit organization established for the public benefit. We coordinate and process permits for on-location motion picture, television and commercial production under contract to an ever-increasing roster of public-sector clients in the Los Angeles region. All permits are issued by the authority of and in accordance with the policies of each client jurisdiction.

We function differently than the typical film office or film commission. Most such entities are publicly-funded government agencies focused on promoting their regions to the film industry. FilmL.A. was created when the City and County of Los Angeles decided to privatize their film permit offices, allowing more flexibility in providing services to production companies and local communities. Although FilmL.A. is funded primarily by permit coordination fees paid by production companies, ongoing community relations is a key component of the service we provide. We work to strike a balance between the needs and interests of the entertainment industry and the neighborhoods affected by on-location production.

In today’s highly competitive, global entertainment production market, our services help the Los Angeles region retain its status as the entertainment production capital of the world.” Source:

The percentage increased is based on the 449 PPD (or permitted production days) for which the office of FilmL.A. registered to online video shoots between April 1, 2013 and June 30, 2013.

The increase is online videos is being attributed to rising popularity of web-based TV, as well as – and this is the sad part of the story -the decrease in on-location video production.

This information is also important for us here at Video Production, as Los Angeles is our third most important market in United States – after our native New York and Chicago, IL. You can read more about our California activities on Indigo’s Los Angeles Video Production Page, it includes a case study featuring another not-for-profit organization – Just Keep Livin, founded by a Hollywood actor and celebrity Matthew McConaughey.
